[Preface.] Incipit: ‘[P]our esmouuoir les courages des humains et les encliner a viure vertueusement . . .’ The anonymous translator remarks that he has included additional matter concerning the kings of France, and that he was engaged on the work at the time of the accession of Charles VIII in 1483. He says that he is a native of the district of Beauvais and has undertaken his task at the request of André de la Haye, seigneur de Chaumont.

1. R-143(1) Copy Bound in two volumes. Variant setting of vol. 1, a_ir: ‘[P]our | euiter | les grās | erreurs | qui peu- | ent sour | dre . . .’ Binding: c.1700 English(?) gold-tooled red morocco. Gilt-edged leaves, marbled pastedowns. Size: 425 × 305 × 65/75 mm. Size of leaf: 414 × 292 mm. The first volume (Douce 300) has been used to press leaves. These have stained leaves l3v and l4r, but have been removed. There are also actual leaves remaining in the opening m3v-m4r, and a very small leaf and a stain it has left in the gutter of m6v-m7r. Elsewhere the volume shows signs of having once had leaves between its pages (ex informatione Catherine Emerson). Ruling with red ink. A few marginal notes, mainly extracting key words, in French in a contemporary hand in brown ink. A print of ‘L'Escossois, L'Escossoise, La Sauuage d'Escosse, Le Capitaine Sauuage' is inserted in vol. 2. Initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue. Capitals touched with yellow wash. Provenance: Unidentified coat of arms on a1r of vol. 1, A2v and D3v of vol. 2, etc.: argent, three pales gules. Perhaps Edward, Lord Harley, later 2nd Earl of Oxford (1689-1741); bought by Thomas Osborne; see Catalogus Bibliothecae Harleianae, I no. 6412. Francis Douce (1757-1834); armorial book-plate.
